How to Connect Light Bulbs to Amazon Alexa and Google Home
01 March, 2023

It’s a fact: Smart home devices are now a permanent part of our lifestyles. They’ve become our weather update device, our stereo, our alarm clock, our never-have-to-do-math-while-baking tool, and so much more.

Why are they the go-to devices for so many everyday needs? Well, the answer is simple: you can command them with your voice from wherever you are. No need to get up, walk anywhere, or touch anything. It’s this feature that makes pairing them with other smart devices, like smart bulbs, so handy. Because you get all the benefits of smart bulbs by giving a simple command. So, to make the setup process as easy as the post-setup process, this blog is going to explain how to pair a smart light bulb with Alexa and Google Home—starting with Alexa. Let’s get to it.

How to Connect a Smart Light Bulb to Alexa

Want hands-free voice control of lighting in your home? This is your step-by-step breakdown on how to connect a light bulb to Alexa.

STEP 1: After you add your Wi-Fi enabled bulb to your fixture and turn it on, connect the bulb in the Cync smart home app by following the simple prompts.

STEP 2: Open the Alexa app, tap the menu button on the bottom right-hand corner, and select “Skills & Games”.

STEP 3: Search for Cync and tap it when it appears. Then click “Enable”.

STEP 4: Sign in with your Cync username and password.

STEP 5: Select “Discover Devices”. When Alexa locates your light bulb, tap “Next”.

STEP 6: Add it to Alexa by selecting its name and then tapping “Setup Device”.

STEP 7: At this point, if you’d like to assign it to a group/room, tap “Add to Group”. However, if there are no other smart devices in that room or if you’re not ready for that step, you can tap the “Skip” button.

STEP 8: If you own additional lights or devices—like our smart plugs or smart switches—and would like hands-free voice control of these, repeat these steps.

And that’s all there is to it. For a more in-depth tutorial, check out our video on how to pair your Cync smart home devices with Amazon Alexa.

How to control Your Smart Lights Through Alexa

Ok, now that you know how to connect Alexa to smart light bulbs, it’s time to learn how to control them. The simplest way, of course, is by giving a voice command. Here are a couple examples:

“Alexa, turn on living room light.”

“Alexa, dim bedroom light to 50%.”

“Alexa, turn off back patio light.”

Another option is to text your command through the Alexa app. This is a relatively newer feature that comes in handy when you’re either far from an Alexa, or you’re in a scenario where you need to be quiet. To do this, simply tap the blue icon in the Alexa app and then the blue keyboard icon.

Want to get to know what your new smart bulb can do? Ask Alexa to play an introduction.

Finally, as you accumulate more Cync smart products in different spaces in your home, you may want to create a group/room in the Alexa app. This allows you to control multiple products in the same space at once. For example, you could tell Alexa to turn off all the lights on the first floor with one command from bed. Pretty smart, huh?

Controlling Your Lights Through Google Home

Just like with an Alexa, using voice commands through your Google Home is the most convenient way to control your lights. You can either start commands with “Hey Google” or “Ok Google” based on your preference. Here are a couple examples:

“Hey Google, schedule bedroom lights to turn on at 8am.”

“Ok Google, turn on porch lights.”

“Hey Google, dim nursery lights to 25%.”

The Google Home app also lets you give nicknames to your Cync smart bulbs and even create routines so your lights turn on and off at the same time every day.
