New Products at Lighting + Building April-2008 Frankfurt
PRESS RELEASE
Ecomagination at work: GE debuts a host of new energy-efficient, longer-lifelighting
Frankfurt April 2008 – GE Consumer & Industrial announces a range of new
energy-efficient and longer-life lighting products at Light + Building 2008 6-11 April in Frankfurt
(Hall 4.1 D10). The products range from new energy-efficient Watt-Miser lamps and UltraStart Watt–M
iserballasts to a new generation of LED products to enhanced life CMH lamps.
"Ecomagination" is a GE initiative to aggressively bring new technologies to market that help
customers and consumers meet pressing environmental challenges. A number of new products will be
debuted at Light + Building to demonstrate GE's commitment to create more environmentally friendly
products.
- T5 Watt-Miser™- Using 5 percent less energy than other T5s
in range, the T5 Watt-Misers uses the same lumen output and are 25 percent more efficient than T8
Polylux types. These lamps are ideal for retail, property management and commercial and industrial
applications where lighting cycles are typically very long and generate very significant energy
savings.
- T8 Watt-Miser™ – More than 10 percent energy savings can
be achieved with this lamp and existing fitting and control gear combination. GE’s T8 Watt-Miser
lamp has excellent lumen maintenance and has the same colour performance, life and lumen
maintenance as the Triphosphor T8. The 32W version will be available in April, 2008, the rest of
the ranges will be released throughout the year. All of the lamps are available in 4 colour
temperature (3000K-6500K)
- LongLast Biax L lamps – Single-ended, compact design lamps
include 40- and 50-watt types with an extended rated life from 12,000 hours to 22,500 hours on a
12-hour burn cycle, plus a new 80-watt LongLast Biax L lamp for applications requiring more lumens.
- UltraStart™ Watt–Miser™ T5 Ballast System – Warm–start
ballast offers wattage savings with lumen equivalency compared to standard T5 systems, parallel
operation that keeps the unit operational if a lamp fails, fast start times (0.9 seconds) and
greater than 80,000 on/off cycles.
- 2D T5 Watt-Miser™ – Provides immediate energy savings of
up to 14 percent to users replacing standard 2D T5 lamps in existing fixtures by reducing lamp
wattage by 4 watts while maintaining the same lumen output as standard 2D T5 lamps. The lamp has
more than a 15,000-hour life rating which could save more than €6 per lamp.
New CMH Lamps
GE's strength in CMH technology and its success in the pursuit of longer lamp life and improved
colour performance have resulted in a new generation of high performance, long-life lamps that
deliver impressive cost of ownership savings
- CMH Ultra 70W G8.5 and G12 ConstantColor™ CMH lamps –
Deliver industry leading lumen maintenance while providing retrofit directly into existing GE
format G8.5 and G12 fixtures. The lamps also offer improved colour with Cri of 90+ and brightness
for extended periods in retail environments, while saving on time, energy and maintenance costs.
- ConstantColor™ CMH MR16 and Supermini Lamps – New 35W
versions of the smallest range of CMH lamps available. The MR16 'Precise' and the Supermini provide
two colour temperatures with a unique 4200k offering and the standard 3000k. The new products also
have significantly improved colour rendition, each being rated at both 930 and 942 respectively,
and outstanding energy efficiency.
- ConstantColor™ – New 20W long life CMH lamp has a life of
12,000 hours, compared to the 7,500 hour span of its GE predecessor. The ConstantColor™ 35W and 70W
products now last for 15,000 hours, as opposed to 10,000 and 9,000 hours, respectively. All three
ConstantColor CMH lamps are 3000k colour and are the longest life products of this kind in the
market.
- CMH Electronic Ballast Systems – CMH ballasts for 20-, 35-
and 70-watt CMH lamps are built for quality and reliability to deliver trouble-free performance
throughout the 50,000 hours of service life. Lamp life is maximized through the use of 150 Hz
square-wave lamp current, constant lamp power and immunity to main voltage transients.
LEDs Knock Down Illumination Barriers
Lumination, LLC, GE Consumer & Industrial's LED business,
offers a wide portfolio of LED products, including a number of next
generation LED light sources for decorative and functional lighting.
- VIO™ high–power white LED – uses proprietary violet–chip technology to produce less than a 75–K
elvin colour shift over a 50,000–hour rated life. Its minimal colour shift overcomes many of the
inherent colour control issues of standard blue or red–green–blue LED devices. VIO LED also
provides high efficiency at warmer colour temperatures, as well as flexible colour temperature and
colour–rendering options.
- LED Refrigerated Display Lighting System – a redesigned LED system incorporates full
dimming control and motion sensing to enable further energy savings for retailers in new and
retrofit applications.
New Outdoor Luminaires
New street light fittings provide a number of attractive, efficient and easy-to-maintain high
pressure sodium, ceramic metal halide and LED options. The lamps come in a range of wattages for a
wide variety of road, architectural and decorative applications.
- Iberia Premium LED – Suitable for all architectural and
urban environments, the Iberia Premium LED can also be used for regular roadway lighting as a
street light LED. These LEDs are weather resistant with a degree of protection IP66 for the optical
assembly and IP44 for the ballast compartment. With a wide range of mounting devises, the fixture
can be mounted vertically, horizontally and wall mounted.
- DS-100 LED – Outdoor decorative urban sites can now
benefit from the latest white LED technology of the DS-100 LED. Dimmable and controllable, these
LEDs are highly energy-efficient (with 30 percent less consumption) and allow for all applications
in amenity lighting for city beautification. The DS-100 LED offers best-in-class lighting
uniformity and available colour temperatures of 3,000oK, 4,000oK, 6,000oK and amber. No maintenance
is needed for up to 50,000 hours or up to 11 years.
"GE has always been a leader in providing outstanding performance and reliability, and we
continue to be a leader when it comes to energy efficiency," says Edward Guest, Marketing Director,
GE Consumer & Industrial EMEA Lighting. "Our newest offerings demonstrate our commitment to
provide more options than ever to achieve energy-efficient performance, long useful life and low
operating costs."

GE Lights The Champs-Elysees
 |
 |
The Champs-Elysees in Paris is being spectacularly illuminated by GE Lighting for the Christmas and New Year period. The Constant Color CMH (Ceramic Metal Halide) 70W 4200°K lamp from GE's latest CMH Constant Color ™ low consumption energy range, has been chosen as the lamp of choice to light up the world famous avenue.
GE's CMH range is ten times more efficient than traditional incandescent light sources, and the lamps have a new extended life expectancy of up to 15,000 hours. This will result in a significantly reduced energy bill for the Champs-Elysees light show - down from 1980kWh in 2006 to 1000kWh - that's a total energy saving of up to 70 percent. Additionally, GE's Constant Color CMH technology provides a consistent white light, providing exceptional color rendering.
A total of one million lighting points have been used to create a unique lighting scene along the 2.4km from the Arc de Triomphe to Concorde. More than 415 trees, including for the first time the two rows of trees lining the avenue, will light up to create a 'sparkling forest' effect. The display also includes 300 trees adorned with crystals, which throw off streaks of light. Additionally, a second line of 120 trees in the inner row have be decorated with 30,000 dynamic flashbulbs to represent the 'light fallen from the stars.'
Commenting on the inauguration of the lights, Harry Boot, Chief Commercial Officer, C&I EMEA, said: "We are proud GE Lighting has been chosen to light the Champs-Elysees for the fifth year running. This year we have opted to use our new CMH range offers as it offers outstanding light quality, efficiency and is low maintenance.
Continuing, Harry said: "The CMH range means the concerns of maintenance costs and the cost of energy can be addressed, whilst simultaneously providing an environmentally friendly lighting solution".
French celebrity, Vanessa Paradis was invited to switch the lights on for the 2008 lighting display, which has been extended until mid January to accompany the start of the winter sales on the Champs Elysees.
About the Champs Elysees Lighting
Since 1981, the illumination on the Champs Elysees has marked the launch of the Parisian end-of-year festivities and celebrations. Over the past 25 years, the event has become an institution, which is covered by the media throughout the world.
During the Illuminations, the number of pedestrians visiting the famous avenue rises from 300,000 to 500,000 on average every day.
Popular French celebrities including Liza Minelli, Johnny Halliday and Monica Belluci have been amongst those to inaugurate the illuminations.
GE scores highest in a recent 'Which? best buys' report on CFL Low Energy Light Bulbs
GE was rated one of the best performers in November's influential consumer Which? insight report on CFL low energy light bulbs. GE's Mini Eco and Elegance T3 were named 'best buys' whilst the GE Electronic was voted "one of the best performing lightbulbs in cold conditions." GE's Electronic T3 scored 76 per cent - the highest rating of all CFL low energy light bulbs tested.
Elegance T3
Awarded 76 per cent in the low energy light bulb sector and given 'Which?'s best buy' award the Elegance T3 is either helix or twisted tube shaped, offers the same light output as a typical incandescent bulb and can be used with timers.
The Elegance T3 has an estimated lifetime of 6,000 hours, however 'Which?'s' report states "they easily exceeded this claim, and almost managed our stringent 8,000 hour milestone - offering an impressive two years more light than promised."
'Which?' awarded GE's Elegance T3 five stars for lifetime, as well as performance when switching on and off. Five stars were also awarded for construction and efficiency, and four stars were given for light output, safety, dimming over time and environmental information.
Mini Eco
Scoring 70 per cent, 'Which?' awarded GE's Mini Eco as another 'best buy' in the low energy light bulb sector. Available in nine, 11 and 20 Watts, the Mini Eco is tube shaped and again, gives off the same colour light as a typical incandescent bulb.
The Eco Mini was awarded five stars for performance when switched on and off, as well as construction. The report also stated that Mini Eco light bulbs have "excellent lifetimes", which also scored five stars in 'Which?'s' ratings.
GE claims Mini Eco light bulbs have a lifetime of 6,000 hours (or approximately six years); 'Which?'s' recent report states they "don't struggle to match their claims." Additionally, the tests carried out by 'Which?' revealed that two of the three wattages almost made the stringent 8,000 hour milestone, "offering an excellent eight year life expectancy."
The Mini Eco also scored four stars for performance in the 'dimming over time' category, as well as four stars for light output, safety and environmental information.
Electronic
GE's Electronic low energy light bulb scored 58 per cent in the recent 'Which?' report and were rated as one of the "best performing bulbs on test on cold conditions." The report also states that the Electronic stands up well to being switched on and off (scoring five stars) and offers good light output (scoring four stars). The Electronic also scored four stars for the following categories: dimming over time, safety and environmental information.
The 'Which?' report also highlights that all the GE lamps tested are sold in easily recyclable paper packaging.
