First GE Induction Lamp
Genura is a first in two ways. It is the first compact induction floodlamp. Philips and Matsushita have induction products but GE's R80 is the first affordable specialised induction lamp that will retrofit into existing luminaires.

Secondly it is the first of a complete family of such lamps, as well as the extension of this technology into other systems. Timing will depend upon the market response to Genura. This is the beginning of a new generation of lamps. Users and lighting designers will have ideas for future products that would not be feasible with conventional lamps.

Operating Characteristics
In many ways Genura is similar to a fluorescent lamp. Certainly the colour appearance and colour rendering are very close to Polylux 830 or Polylux 827.

Starting is instant with no flicker. Initial light output from a cold lamp is about 60% and the warm- up period is about 30 seconds to 90% light output. Full output is reached in about 3 - 4 minutes. The low power rating and shape of the lamp determine the thermal characteristics.

Safety
Genura conforms to guidance laid down by National Radiological Protection Boards regarding exposure to electromagnetic fields. Within the European Union new standards are being formulated called Electro Magnetic Compatibility (EMC). These will encompass all electrical equipment, not just lighting. Basically there are two aspects, one, which will require equipment to cause no interference to other equipment, and the second that requires electrical equipment to be immune to electrical interference. The details of this wide-ranging specification are still being drafted, but GE products will have to conform if they are to remain in the market place.

The important distinction is NRPB deals with human safety whereas EMC deals with equipment compatibility, and avoiding interference. Genura is CE marked.

Advantages of Induction Lamps

  • An energy saving lamp that looks like a lamp, this is a top benefit for users.
  • Low energy lamp with economic and environmental savings for applications still dominated by filament lamps.
  • Long life lamp reduces maintenance costs and inventory. At the specified life of 15,000 hours the light output will be about 75% of initial lumens and is normally the time when changing the lamps gives better value-for-money than extending their life.
  • Low heat dissipation. Many display situations have to compromise between a bright attractive presentation, and safeguarding the materials being illuminated. With Genura the heating effect will be only a quarter that from equivalent filament lamps. This can also improve the thermal comfort level within the lit space.
  • "Flicker-free". The high frequency operation will provide good visual comfort not always provided by conventional fluorescent or HID light sources.
  • Good colour rendering and appearance. The phosphor coating is Polylux 827 or 830 so gives a colour rendering index of over 80 and appearance of 2700K or 3000K which match well with filament as well as fluorescent lamps.
  • Integral control gear and a lamp shape very similar to R80 means there is a large retro-fit market for this lamp.
  • Even diffusion gives wider beam than filament R80 lamps with no filament "hotspots".
