Our Customer

The Turkuaz campus, also known as the New Campus, is a facility of Çankaya University, which was originally established in 1997 by the Sitki Alp Education Foundation in Ankara, Turkey. Turkuaz Campus was built in 2011, and once it opened, many faculties moved here, hosting the daily education of students of law, natural sciences or architecture.

The Campus was awarded by the Arkitera Architecture Centre, an independent architecture centre based in Istanbul dedicated to sustain a better architectural practice, enhance the architectural culture and to raise the quality of architecture in Turkey.

The expectation

GE LED Outdoor Lighting Cankaya University

Outdoor lighting was required across the 440,000m² estate to light roadways and pedestrian pathways. Energy efficiency was a key requirement; however this couldn't be to the detriment of light quality. Safety and security is paramount across large campus such as Turkuaz. Pedestrians need to feel secure and comfortable in their surroundings and ideal driving conditions require highly uniform lighting on the road surface, with minimum glare – to enhance peripheral vision and aid quicker response times.

The fixtures also needed to be in-keeping with the campus' architecture and the project sought that perfect balance between form and function. They needed to be aesthetically pleasing, both during daylight hours and whilst in operation.

The solution

GE's Iberia LED luminaire was proposed for the roadway lighting – a product answering the increasing need to provide energy savings and reduce maintenance costs. With its contemporary design GE's Iberia LED luminaire offers improved visual acuity, better vertical luminance and smoother visual transition. Considerable energy savings are achieved due to highly efficient photometric reflectors, which effectively deliver the required amount of light without wasteful or irritating light spill into neighbouring areas.

A rated lifetime of 50,000 hours at L85 is particularly suited to the public lighting domain where maintenance costs have to be kept to a minimum.

For the pedestrian pathways GE's Duna LED luminaires were used. A perfect combination of aesthetics and functionality, the decorative nature of the truncated cone design makes it an ideal solution for pedestrian walkways and squares.

The Duna LED luminaire operates with 88W energy use, providing symmetrical and asymmetrical light distribution. It offers both vertical and horizontal uniformity and combined with the high chromatic reproduction contributed by LED technology (white light), it helps face recognition and better visual comfort. Again, its advanced optical design enables the light to be directed only where it is wanted.

Results & Benefits

The lighting scheme will deliver a 46% saving when compared to conventional ceramic metal halide solutions, totalling 63,875 Kwhr per annum alongside a 100% improvement in maintenance costs and a total of 57% cut in operational costs. In addition, the enhanced visual conditions created through improved light levels and uniformity not only makes the environment visually pleasing but also enhances security and safety for students, teachers and other pedestrians.

"The university was very pleased with the result, that combines sustainability, costs savings and also a general improvement in safety thanks to the LED technology and the white light it produces." – summarized Selcuk Mert, Sales General manager of GE Lighting Turkey.
