Contributing to its continual carbon reduction commitment, Sainsbury's have specified GE Lighting's portfolio of LED external fittings, branded Area Lighter. Following a successful trial, the fittings will light carparks across all new build and store extensions. Offering a significant energy saving and extended life, the fittings offer remarkable advantages over traditional HPS equivalents.
Sainsbury's Climate Change Strategy divides the business into three elements: Operations, Products and Customers and the past year has seen the retailer concentrate as much on the way its stores and distribution systems manage issues like waste, carbon and water as it does on its product range and how it can help customers shop and live more sustainably.
The shift from HPS to LED also sees a move away from yellow ambient light to bright white light, meaning Sainsbury's carparks will now benefit from enhanced security and visual perception. In addition, the Area Lighter's modular optical ring design produces superior vertical illuminance, efficiently delivering the required amount of light without wasteful or irritating light spill into neighbouring areas.

"By working closely with GE Lighting we've been able to set a specification that has no requirement for an increase in lighting columns or luminaire heads, provides better light quality and uses significantly less energy. This, in addition to an increase in service life and interchangeable light source optimises cost of ownership and crucially delivers a quick payback”. James Fleet, Specification Sales Manager adds, “Sainsbury's have continually demonstrated their proactive adoption of energy efficient technology. Area Lighter satisfies all project parameters – visually the look and feel of the car parks is enhanced, energy and maintenance costs are significantly reduced, sustainability is optimised and return on investment targets are achieved”.
